Special Olympics Special Smiles

Special Olympics Special Smiles initiative became an interest of Dr. Felton’s when she was introduced to the event by a close mentor and friend in dental school. She has been active in athlete screening events since 2007 in Ohio, Arizona and now serves as the director for the events in Colorado!

Special Olympics provides year round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Dental screenings for athletes during these events help to ensure their overall health is being taken into consideration. Athletes also receive free hearing and health screenings from other professional volunteers. The goal is to improve overall health outcomes and help the athletes be the best that they can be.
